Year 1 Travel the World in a Virtual Reality Adventure

On Friday, Miss Gilmore, Computing Lead at our sister school, Chinthurst School. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience cutting-edge technology while taking a walk on the wild side.

Through the VR headsets, the children were transported to incredible places around the world and came face to face with animals in their natural habitats. Their journey began in the Arctic, where they spotted polar bears roaming across the icy landscape. From there, they soared high above North America alongside bald eagles before travelling to Antarctica to see colonies of penguins waddling across the ice. The adventure continued on the plains of Kenya, where the children searched carefully for cheetahs expertly camouflaged in the grass.

There was huge excitement as the children then dived beneath the ocean’s surface to explore an underwater world filled with fascinating marine life, including sharks and gentle manatees. Changing habitats once again, they discovered crocodiles, snakes and elephants living in the wild.

As they learnt how to use the VR headsets, the children quickly discovered how to explore their surroundings by looking up, down and tilting their heads from side to side to uncover what else might appear. Gasps of amazement and delighted laughter rang through the classroom as they were fully immersed in these virtual environments. During their adventure, the children captured their learning by drawing the animals they had seen and writing descriptive sentences about them, while also identifying which parts of the world these animals call home.

A big thank you to Miss Gilmore for sharing her expertise and bringing Chinthurst’s VR headsets with her. It was a wonderful example of the exciting opportunities that come from being part of the Reigate Grammar School family of schools, and a fantastic follow-up to the IndyCar workshop the children enjoyed at Chinthurst before half term.
