Reception’s Exciting Adventure at Nower Woods

On Tuesday, Reception enjoyed an exciting school trip to Nower Woods, spending the day exploring nature and taking part in a range of hands-on activities.

The adventure began with a minibeast hunt. Armed with bug pots and ‘tickling sticks’, the children carefully searched beneath logs and among the leaves for tiny creatures. They were delighted by their discoveries and enjoyed looking at the minibeasts under a microscope before sorting them according to the number of legs they had. The fun continued with a Minibeast Olympics, after which all the creatures were carefully returned to their natural habitats.

Next, the children stepped into the shoes of nocturnal animals. Wearing blindfolds, they followed a trail using only their sense of touch, pretending their hands were antennae. This exciting and unusual activity was a completely new experience for many, and the children embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and confidence.

The woodland fun continued as the children created magical potions to help the trees grow big and strong. Using natural treasures collected from around the woods, they mixed and stirred their special recipes before settling down for a picnic lunch. Even a dramatic downpour of rain couldn’t dampen their spirits, and there was plenty of excitement as they sheltered together and listened to the rain.

In the afternoon, it was time for pond dipping. The children took turns carefully sweeping their nets amongst the lily pads and were fascinated by the pond life they discovered. There was great excitement as they examined their finds and learned more about the creatures living beneath the water’s surface.

Back at school, the adventure continued in the classroom as the children wrote recounts of their day. They were bursting with memories, facts and exciting stories to share, and many produced more writing than ever before. The teachers were incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and achievements.

Reception is now looking forward to the next stage of their woodland learning, transforming shoeboxes into miniature versions of Nower Woods. With so many wonderful memories and ideas to draw upon, the children can’t wait to bring their woodland adventure to life.
