Year 1 Explore Nature at Wisley Gardens
15th May 2026
This week, Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic educational visit to RHS Garden Wisley. Despite the changing weather, the children had a wonderful day filled with exciting discoveries, teamwork and hands-on learning in the beautiful surroundings of the gardens.
The adventure began as soon as the children arrived, with a very friendly duck greeting them at the information centre! Everyone was amazed to get so close, and it was the perfect start to a memorable day outdoors.
During the morning, the children explored the gardens looking carefully for signs of spring. They enjoyed identifying different plants, including fruits and vegetables that we can eat, while learning more about the natural world around them. There was also plenty of excitement in the play area, where the children worked together to build dens and demonstrated excellent teamwork and creativity.
After lunch, Year 1 took part in a fascinating workshop led by an expert guide. The children learnt about the different parts of a plant and discovered the many ways seeds can be dispersed. They then had the opportunity to plant their own cornflower seeds, which they will carefully nurture at school before taking them home to plant in their own gardens.
The learning continued with a guided walk through the alpine gardens, where the children searched for different natural materials to create their own colourful memory sticks. They loved collecting objects in all the colours of the rainbow and proudly adding them to their creations.
One of the highlights of the day was visiting the tallest redwood tree in Wisley Gardens, which is over 200 years old. The children were amazed by its incredible size and enjoyed hearing more about its history.
Year 1 had a fantastic day filled with exploration, curiosity and fun, creating memories that are sure to last for a very long time.
