Encouraging Independence from the Very Beginning

At St Christopher’s Nursery & School, we believe some of the most important learning in the early years happens in the smallest moments. Not just learning to read, write or count – but learning to try, explore, problem solve and develop the confidence to say, “I can do it myself.”

That’s why we were delighted to contribute to the latest Muddy Stilettos Good Schools Guide feature on encouraging independence in the early years, exploring how independence can be nurtured gently and meaningfully from Nursery onwards.

At St Christopher’s, independence is woven naturally into everyday life. From preparing snacks in our child-sized kitchen to confidently organising belongings, pouring drinks and learning practical life skills, children are encouraged to take ownership of their environment in ways that feel joyful, purposeful and age appropriate.

Rather than rushing childhood, our approach creates opportunities for children to build confidence through hands-on experiences, predictable routines and supportive encouragement. Whether mastering the “coat flip,” exploring outdoors in Forest School or collaborating with friends through play, these small daily successes help children develop resilience, curiosity and self-belief.

Alongside this, children benefit from a rich and balanced curriculum, including specialist teaching in French, music, art, PE and Forest School, as well as strong foundations in phonics and numeracy. By combining academic readiness with emotional confidence and practical independence, children leave Nursery feeling secure, capable and excited for the next stage of their learning journey.

As highlighted in the Muddy Stilettos article, true independence in the early years is not about children doing everything alone. It’s about giving them the confidence to have a go, make choices, solve problems and discover what they are capable of in an environment where they feel safe, supported and inspired.

We are proud to see our ethos featured in the Muddy Stilettos Good Schools Guide and to continue championing an early years experience where childhood wonder and school readiness go hand in hand.
