Year 2 Enjoy Their First Residential Adventure at Juniper Hall
22nd June 2026
There was great excitement among Year 2 as they set off on their very first residential adventure to Juniper Hall for two days of exploration, discovery and fun with friends.
After arriving and meeting their tutors, the children enjoyed exploring the grounds before putting their map-reading skills to the test during an orienteering challenge. Even the rain added to the adventure as they worked together to navigate their way around the site, showing fantastic teamwork, determination and problem-solving skills.
The afternoon saw the children investigating the fascinating world of pond life during the Secret Ponds activity. Armed with nets and trays, they discovered a variety of aquatic creatures, including dragonfly nymphs and the remarkable cased caddisfly larvae. There was plenty of excitement as they shared their findings and learned more about the creatures living beneath the water’s surface.
After settling into their bedrooms and enjoying a well-earnt slice of cake and a drink, the children helped set humane mammal traps around the grounds ready for the next morning. The day ended in the best possible way – gathered around a campfire, singing songs, toasting marshmallows and chatting about their favourite moments from a wonderful first day.
The second morning began with eager anticipation as the children checked the mammal traps. They were delighted to discover six voles and three mice tucked up inside after enjoying the food that had been left for them. Learning about the differences between the diurnal voles and nocturnal mice was fascinating, and it was lovely to watch the animals scamper safely back into their natural habitat.
Next, the children became wildlife detectives during the Disappearing Animals activity, discovering how minibeasts use colour and camouflage to protect themselves. Searching different habitats around the grounds, they uncovered a wide range of invertebrates and impressed staff with their thoughtful questions and natural curiosity.
In the afternoon, Year 2 worked together to tackle a shelter-building challenge. Learning what is needed to survive in the wilderness, they designed and built their own rainproof shelters, sharing ideas, supporting one another and showing resilience when things didn’t quite go to plan.
Throughout the residential, the children represented the school beautifully. They embraced every new experience with enthusiasm, kindness and curiosity, and it was a joy to see their confidence grow over the two days. As their very first time staying away from home with friends, the Juniper Hall residential was a truly special milestone and a wonderful opportunity to nurture independence, strengthen friendships and create memories that will last for years to come.
